 Lopez, 13, was shot by Deputy Erick Gelhaus on October 22nd in southwest Santa Rosa after he carried what turned out to be a pellet gun.

Sao Paulo, Brazil (CNN) -- João Rodrigo Silva Santos didn't come home Monday night.

When the former professional footballer's wife opened the door on her way to work the next morning, she found his severed head on their front step.

The head was inside a backpack, police said. Santos' eyes and tongue had been gouged out, according to Brazilian media reports.

Kenosha, Wis. — A Wisconsin man wearing clown makeup dangled a child upside down from an overpass after coming home drunk from a Halloween party, according to officials who charged him with child abuse.

Couple accused of using shock collar on child

(CNN) —A Connecticut couple were arraigned in court Wednesday after being accused of punishing a child with an electric shock collar meant for dogs, according to the Danbury Judicial District Court clerk's office.

 Danbury police said Eduardo Montanez, 43, and his wife, Paula, 34, disciplined the child by putting the collar on so it would shock the youth.

NBC said it is in negotiations with Brett and Hannah Anderson, the father and daughter who were caught up in a bizarre kidnapping and murder ordeal during the summer, to create “longform” non-fiction programming about the case.

Hannah Anderson, 16, was the subject of a multi-state manhunt in August after she was abducted by a family friend, James Lee DiMaggio Jr., who is suspected of killing her mother and younger brother near San Diego.

Penn State announced Monday it will pay $59.7 million to settle claims by 26 young men who said they were sexually abused by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, capping a year of negotiations.

John Ramsey says he's opposed to the possible release of documents in an indictment related to the 1996 killing of his 6-year-old daughter, JonBenet.

 The Daily Camera reports Ramsey's attorneys sent a letter Sunday to Boulder District Attorney Stan Garnett. It says the release of an indictment that wasn’t prosecuted "only serves to further defame (John Ramsey) and his late wife Patricia."

Boy, 13, Carrying Toy Gun Killed By Police

Northern California sheriff's deputies have shot dead a 13-year-old boy who was carrying what turned out to be a replica rifle, authorities have said.

 Two Sonoma County deputies on patrol saw the boy walking with what appeared to be a high-powered weapon on Tuesday in Santa Rosa, sheriff's Lieutenant Dennis O'Leary said.

 They called for backup and repeatedly ordered him to drop the rifle, which resembled an AK-47 with a black magazine cartridge and brown butt, according to a photograph released by the sheriff's office.

Nevada shooter's parents may face charges if gun came from home ( Sparks Middle School )

The parents of a seventh-grader that shot and killed a teacher and wounded two students before killing himself could face charges if police determine the gun came from home, police said Wednesday.

 "The potential is there [for charges to be filed]," said Sparks Police Department deputy chief Tom Miller. The local prosecutor's office would then determine whether to press charges.

Judge Sets Aside Conviction, Orders New Trial For Michael Skakel In Martha Moxley Murder

In a long and biting decision, a state judge on Wednesday set aside Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel's murder conviction and ordered his retrial in the 1975 death of Greenwich teenager Martha Moxley because of the glaring ineffectiveness of Skakel's original trial lawyer.

 Judge Thomas Bishop devoted long stretches of his 136-page decision, dated Wednesday, to a harsh critique of Skakel's original trial lawyer Michael Sherman. Skakel is about halfway through a 20-year-to-life prison sentence for Moxley's murder.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) -- A drawing of a game involving a serial killer and a maze was found in the apartment of Colorado theater shooting defendant James Holmes, a police detective testified Wednesday.

 The drawing also involved an address in downtown Denver, Aurora police detective Thomas Wilson said. It was found on a page in a spiral notebook inside Holmes' backpack.

7 Brittney Wood family members, friends face Mobile County sex abuse charges (updated)

MOBILE, Alabama -- The sex abuse investigation first started in Baldwin County before the disappearance of Mobile mother Brittney Wood led Tuesday to the arrest and rearrest of multiple suspects in Mobile County, according to the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

 Wood was last seen on May 30, 2012. On June 19, 2012, her maternal uncle Randall Scott Wood, and her uncle by marriage, Dustin Kent, were picked up in the first of a series of sex abuse arrests for the Wood family and those close to them.

Joshua Cavett arraigned on a 13-count indictment in wife's killing

Joshua Re Cavett returned to Multnomah County Circuit Court Tuesday morning to be arraigned on a 13-count grand jury indictment.

 The indictment charges him with three counts of aggravated murder with a firearm, three counts of first-degree burglary with a firearm, one count each of second-degree custodial interference, murder with a firearm, and unlawful use of a firearm, three counts of felon in possession of a firearm and one count of felon in possession of body armor.

Mother in baby Elaina case back in court for pretrial hearing

TOLEDO -- Angela Steinfurth will make another court appearance Wednesday morning in the case of her daughter, baby Elaina, whose remains were found in an east Toledo garage in early September.

 Steinfurth has been held behind bars on charges of obstruction of justice since her indictment in July. Her attorney has been asking for more time to review more than 30 hours of tape interviews with Toledo Police investigators.

OAKLAND, Maine — Numerous law enforcement officials began canvassing a wooded area in Oakland early Wednesday morning in an effort to locate missing toddler Ayla Reynolds.

 Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Wednesday in a news release that more than 30 personnel from Oakland police, Maine State Police, four canine teams, state police divers and game wardens are participating in the search.
