They claim that Spell, 24, could not understand what was happening to him during an interrogation following his arrest in South Dakota in January, 2012, six days after Arnold disappeared from a Sidney street.

The family of a pregnant woman injected with heroin, raped and killed is suing over her death.

Filed Monday in Ohio, the lawsuit holds former doctor Ali Salim, the hospital he used to work for and Craigslist accountable for Deanna Ballman’s death, and is seeking $40million in damages.

Mr. Salim has been charged in connection with the death of both the 23-year-old expectant mother and her unborn child.

The website should have known Mr. Salim was a danger to women after numerous complaints were made to both local police – who notified the site of the danger he posed – and directly to the site by abused women, according to the suit.

‘Craigslist was on notice and knew or should have known defendant Ali Salim was inherently dangerous to its Internet users,’ the suit said.

Man uses hammer to disfigure 4-year-old ( Ethan Stacy )

By AP

A Utah judge ruled there's enough evidence for a man accused of killing his 4-year-old stepson to stand trial on murder charges.

Prosecutors say 34-year-old Nathanael Sloop and his wife malnourished and abused the boy for days until he died in May 2010. Sloop is accused of using a hammer to disfigure Ethan Stacy's face and burying his body in the northern Utah mountains.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Second District Judge Glen Dawson on Thursday ordered Sloop to stand trial on charges of aggravated murder, child abuse, obstruction of justice and desecration of a body. Prosecutors say they plan to seek the death penalty against Sloop, who pleaded not guilty to the charges last year.

Feds: California teen alleges captivity, sexual abuse on marijuana 'farm'

By Natalia Perez-Segnini, CNN
July 31, 2013
(CNN) -- Two Northern California men are due in federal court Wednesday in what began as another big pot-growing drug bust but what has become a horrifying story of one teenager's alleged torment, captivity and sexual abuse.

The criminal complaint against the two men -- Ryan Balletto, 30, and Patrick Pearmain, 24 -- outlines the allegations of a 15-year-old girl's ordeal of being held in a coffin-like box for hours on end at a marijuana-growing "farm" where she worked trimming plants.

Balletto and Pearmain were criminally charged in federal court earlier this month -- and are in custody without bail -- with conspiracy to manufacture and distribute more than 1,000 marijuana plants and with using a minor in a drug operation. Additionally Pearmain faces state charges of kidnapping to commit robbery or rape and unlawful sex with a minor. Balletto faces state charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a child.

Federal prosecutors say there’s no need to move the trial of the man accused of killing a 4-year-old Mt. Pleasant boy in 2012.

The attorney for Anthony Michael Bennett argued in court documents that there’s been too much negative publicity about the case. Bennett, 21, is charged with killing Carnel Chamberlain, whose burned remains were found buried last summer outside the boy’s home on Tomah Road on the Isabella Reservation.

JACKSON— As the Jackson Police and BCI continue to piece together the events leading to the abduction of Macey Stewart, they have plenty of conflicting accounts of her disappearance to look at.

Macey disappeared from the porch of her home on Friday, July 26, at approximately 1:30 a.m., but there were different versions of events leading up to the time she disappeared.

Area law enforcement agencies, fire departments, water rescue teams, The Red Cross, and Emergency Response Units, spent the better part of the day searching for Macey in the area surrounding her 207 North Chestnut Street home. At a little after 4 p.m. Friday evening, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office received a call that Macey was discovered in the back yard of an Oakland Road home in Liberty Township. She had suffered some injuries and was unclothed.

Doctor: Hypothermia, malnutrition contributed to Williams girl's death

Updated: 6:37 pm, Tue Jul 30, 2013.
By Gina Cole
MOUNT VERNON — A forensic pathologist confirmed in court Tuesday that a girl whose adoptive parents are accused of abusing her to death died of hypothermia hastened by malnutrition and a stomach condition.

Dr. Daniel Selove of Everett performed an autopsy on Hana Williams’ body about 12 hours after she died. Hana collapsed around midnight in the backyard of the family’s Sedro-Woolley home on a rainy night in May 2011. She had been out in the cold for several hours wearing a T-shirt and cutoff sweatpants.

Larry and Carri Williams are now charged with homicide by abuse and first-degree manslaughter, as well as first-degree assault in connection with alleged abuse of their adopted son. They have each pleaded not guilty.

As prosecutors showed photos of Hana’s 5-foot-tall, 78-pound body on Tuesday, Selove noted her visible ribcage and described her as “abnormally thin.” Hana dropped almost a quarter of her body weight sometime between 2009 and 2011, but her medical records do not show how quickly the change happened.

“We still have extreme confidence that they’re going to drive resolution to the case,” Horman said to reporters around 3:15 p.m. He said law enforcement is “again asking us to help protect the information as much as we can, so it doesn’t interfere with the integrity of what they’re doing. And we’re doing our best in the civil arena to do that.”

MOBILE, Alabama – Almost half of potential jurors believe it is definite or probable that a local man charged with capital murder is guilty of slowly poisoning his children to death, according to a survey commissioned by the defendant’s lawyers.

The survey, conducted by Jerry Ingram of Southeast Research in Montgomery, indicates that more than a third of potential jurors know a moderate amount or a great deal about the accusations against capital murder defendant John DeBlase. Another 29 percent knew a little bit about the case.

DeBlase’s lawyers have offered the survey to bolster their argument that pretrial publicity has tainted the jury pool. They have asked Mobile County Circuit Judge Rick Stout to move the trial to a different county.

Attorneys for Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes have accused prosecutors of breaches of legal ethics and have thrown into question the case's February trial date.

Holmes' attorneys on Monday filed two motions for sanctions against prosecutors.

One motion suggests prosecutors have been urging witnesses not to speak to defense investigators and have been telling witnesses who did talk to the defense to report back to prosecutors about what they were asked. Prosecutors allegedly told witnesses that, if they spoke to Holmes' attorneys, their words would be manipulated and twisted around, according to the defense motion.

OTTUMWA -- The parents of Kathlynn Shepard, the Iowa teen who was kidnapped and murdered nearly two months ago by a paroled convict, are pushing for a law that will protect Iowa children from the tragedy they recently suffered.

Kathlynn's Law would be based on a similar measure called Chelsea's Law, which passed in California in 2010. That legislation enforces a one-strike provision for sexual predators who rape children, and additionally requires enhanced monitoring of paroled sex offenders and other criminals thought to be dangerous to children.

Tia neighbour ‘gave police false sighting after murder’

A neighbour of murdered schoolgirl Tia Sharp wasted police time by claiming he saw her leave her grandmother’s house when she was already dead, a court heard today.

Stuart Hazell, 37, who was the lover of Christine Sharp, Tia’s grandmother, had strangled 12-year-old Tia the previous night and hid her body in the loft of the house in New Addington, Surrey, in August last year. In May, Hazell admitted her murder and was jailed for life.

Hazell told police he had not seen Tia after she left to go shopping in Croydon and Paul Meehan’s evidence seemed to confirm this, Croydon magistrates’ court heard.

Published: July 28, 2013 9:24 PM
By COLLEEN LONG. The Associated Press
It was more than 20 years ago when a highway worker smelled something rotting inside a picnic cooler discarded near the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan.

He flipped it over and out tumbled the bound, decomposing body of a little girl and a few full cans of Coke.

Despite the efforts of New York Police Department detectives who worked the case for years, she remains anonymous even today, known only as Baby Hope, age 3 to 5. On July 23, the 22nd anniversary of the discovery, cold-case detectives canvassed the Manhattan neighborhood near where the blue cooler was tossed, plastered notices on signposts and announced a $12,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction in the unsolved crime.

Moors murderer Myra Hindley hatched an audacious plot to escape from jail and work as a missionary in Brazil with her lesbian lover.

The notorious child killer planned to copy jail keys using bars of soap and use them to flee over the perimeter wall after falling in love with a prison officer who had previously been a nun.

During months of meticulous preparation for the plot in the early Seventies, Hindley studied the movements of the guards at Holloway in North London, changed her name by deed poll and applied for a driving licence in the name Myra Spencer.
