SANTA ROSA (KPIX 5) — Two months before Andy Lopez was fatally shot by a Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy, a Santa Rosa man said the same deputy pointed a gun at him twice during a traffic stop.

 Lopez, 13, was shot by Deputy Erick Gelhaus on October 22nd in southwest Santa Rosa after he carried what turned out to be a pellet gun.

When the former professional footballer's wife opened the door on her way to work the next morning, she found his severed head on their front step.

The head was inside a backpack, police said. Santos' eyes and tongue had been gouged out, according to Brazilian media reports.

Kenosha, Wis. — A Wisconsin man wearing clown makeup dangled a child upside down from an overpass after coming home drunk from a Halloween party, according to officials who charged him with child abuse.

 The Kenosha News reports that a woman called police after she saw 33-year-old Antonio Brown dragging two screaming children into woods in Kenosha about 2 a.m. Sunday. The 13- and 8-year-old children said Brown was their mother’s boyfriend.

Couple accused of using shock collar on child

(CNN) —A Connecticut couple were arraigned in court Wednesday after being accused of punishing a child with an electric shock collar meant for dogs, according to the Danbury Judicial District Court clerk's office.

 Danbury police said Eduardo Montanez, 43, and his wife, Paula, 34, disciplined the child by putting the collar on so it would shock the youth.

NBC said it is in negotiations with Brett and Hannah Anderson, the father and daughter who were caught up in a bizarre kidnapping and murder ordeal during the summer, to create “longform” non-fiction programming about the case.

Hannah Anderson, 16, was the subject of a multi-state manhunt in August after she was abducted by a family friend, James Lee DiMaggio Jr., who is suspected of killing her mother and younger brother near San Diego.

 DiMaggio was shot to death by FBI agents in a remote part of Idaho after he fled California with the girl. Anderson was released unharmed.

The state has released the full toxicology report on Sandy Hook school shooter Adam Lanza, confirming that he had no drugs or alcohol in his system when he shot and killed 20 first-graders and six women on Dec. 14.

 The Courant first reported in May that Lanza had no drugs or alcohol in his system.

The report provides some additional details, including that Lanza tested negative for marijuana and had part of his brain taken to UConn for genetic testing.

 Reuben Kenneth Lujan was sentenced to life without parole for killing his estranged wife, Monica, 26, and her friend, deputy Gilbert Madrigal, 45, by smashing their heads with a concrete block.

BOSTON (AP) - A lawyer for a friend of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev asked a judge Tuesday to lift an order that keeps most court documents against the friend hidden from public view.

 The lawyer for the friend, Azamat Tazhayakov, argued during a hearing in U.S. District Court that the order is overly broad and that prosecutors haven't shown it is needed.

 He said the order prohibits him from publicly discussing any materials that prosecutors have given to the defense.

DIXON (AP) -- A sheriff says the cause of death of a child whose remains were found in south-central Missouri might never be known, but investigators hope to learn the identity.

According to the Daily Mail, 44-year-old Bijan Ebrahimi was arrested in July after being accused of taking "inappropriate" images of neighborhood children.

The defense lawyer for Guy Heinze Jr., convicted Friday in the mass murders of eight people, said Monday he expects to seek a new trial within a month after Heinze is sentenced.

 "I respect the jury's verdict, but I don't agree with it," said Newell Hamilton of the Office of the Georgia Capital Defenders.

 Heinze was found guilty on eight counts of murder and one of attempted murder, in addition to several lesser drug-related charges, after a nearly two-week jury trial in Glynn County Superior Court.


Toddler found living in car boot

The little girl, aged between 15 and 23 months, was found by mechanics on Friday when her mother brought the Peugeot 307 for repairs to a garage in Terrasson, in central France.

 Police said one of the mechanics heard "bizarre noises, like moans" coming from the car boot.

 The mother, 45, a Portuguese woman known only as Rose-Marie, claimed the noises came from "toys" .


Penn State to pay $59.7 million to settle Sandusky sex abuse claims

Penn State announced Monday it will pay $59.7 million to settle claims by 26 young men who said they were sexually abused by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, capping a year of negotiations.

News of some of the settlements has been trickling out in recent months. The university said six claims are still outstanding.

It has rejected some of them and is in talks to settle the others. “We hope this is another step forward in the healing process for those hurt by Mr. Sandusky, and another step forward for Penn State,” University President Rodney Erickson said in a statement

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A state judge on Thursday moved the trial of a Colorado man charged with killing a popular eastern Montana teacher after defense attorneys argued that he could not receive a fair hearing in her hometown.

 District Judge Richard Simonton moved Michael Keith Spell's Jan. 6 murder trial to Glendive, court officials said. That's about 50 miles away from the small community of Sidney, where victim Sherry Arnold taught high school math.

CNN — (CNN) -- The Florida cyberbullying case in which two girls, ages 14 and 12, face felony stalking charges after the suicide of 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick could lead other law agencies to file similar felony charges against adolescent bullies, experts said.

 Authorities often place juveniles accused of cyberabuse under parental or school supervision; or, if the youths are charged, they face lesser offenses such as hacking or identity theft, experts said.

SANFORD — Authorities said they found remains in a wooded area off U.S. Highway 17-92 while searching on Sunday for a missing Deltona mother and her two children.

 The remains are of an adult, said Shannon Cordingly, a Sanford police spokeswoman. But it's likely they're not of 28-year-old Yessenia Suarez, who has been missing for about a week, Cordingly added. She said the medical examiner still needs to conduct an autopsy.

 "This girl deserves more than having her face plastered across the country and being blamed, directly blamed for the death of one of her friends…I'm not going to let her be bullied," said Jose Baez whose client is 12 and is facing aggravated felony stalking charges in Sedwick's death.

DELTONA, Fla. — The search for the bodies of a Volusia County mother and her two children will resume Monday morning, while the sole person of interest in the case is back in jail after attempting suicide.

 Authorities have been searching for 28-year-old Yessenia Suarez and her two children, 8-year-old Michael Otto and 9-year-old Thalia Otto, since they disappeared Wednesday.


Madeleine McCann's parents told they are no longer suspects by Portuguese police

NEW YORK (AP) - A Chinese immigrant who neighbours said struggled to survive in America was arrested on Sunday on five counts of murder in the stabbing deaths of his cousin's wife and her four children in their Brooklyn home - using a butcher knife.

 The suspect, 25-year-old Mingdong Chen, implicated himself in the killings late on Saturday in the Sunset Park neighbourhood, police said. "They were cut and butchered with a kitchen knife," said department chief Philip Banks III.

A young man living with a Roma family in Cyprus will be DNA tested after evidence emerged suggesting he could be missing Brit Ben Needham, it was claimed today.

 Greek authorities believe they may have identified Ben, who was just two went he went missing from his family while they where holidaying in Kos, in 1991.

 Police have even handed Ben's mother Kerry an image of the man they are testing. He is tall with light brown hair and blue eyes, wearing a blue and white striped rugby top.

AVONDALE, AZ - A Valley mom is facing child abuse charges after allegedly burning her 3-year-old's face with a Hot Pocket.

According to a police report, Katia Lieutaud, 35, was arrested near Avondale Boulevard and Van Buren Street Monday after Lieutaud got frustrated with the child and shoved her face into the hot food causing second degree burns.

Northern California sheriff's deputies have shot dead a 13-year-old boy who was carrying what turned out to be a replica rifle, authorities have said.

 Two Sonoma County deputies on patrol saw the boy walking with what appeared to be a high-powered weapon on Tuesday in Santa Rosa, sheriff's Lieutenant Dennis O'Leary said.

 They called for backup and repeatedly ordered him to drop the rifle, which resembled an AK-47 with a black magazine cartridge and brown butt, according to a photograph released by the sheriff's office.

Mother in baby Elaina case back in court for pretrial hearing

TOLEDO -- Angela Steinfurth will make another court appearance Wednesday morning in the case of her daughter, baby Elaina, whose remains were found in an east Toledo garage in early September.

 Steinfurth has been held behind bars on charges of obstruction of justice since her indictment in July. Her attorney has been asking for more time to review more than 30 hours of tape interviews with Toledo Police investigators.

 Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Wednesday in a news release that more than 30 personnel from Oakland police, Maine State Police, four canine teams, state police divers and game wardens are participating in the search.
