Jose Baez amazed by outrage at Casey Anthony

The paperback version of Jose Baez's "Presumed Guilty" went on sale Tuesday, and his views about the Casey Anthony trial are likely to stir discussion.

"It still amazes me that so many people remain so outraged at her acquittal," Baez writes in a new afterword. "It tells me something very disturbing: some people would much rather see an innocent person go to jail than see a guilty person go free. Our laws are based on the premisethat says, 'May ten guilty people go free before one innocent person is convicted.' That's the ideal, but unfortunately our media-driven society apparently doesn't feel that way. All you have to do is look at all the anger directed at Casey. They expressed deep outrage."

Baez, who successfully defended Anthony, writes that only one legal institution -- the jury system -- came out looking good in the case. Anthony was acquitted in 2011 of murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

Kershaw County, SC (WLTX) -- SLED, Kershaw County Deputies and volunteers from the University of South Carolina searched a field in Kershaw County for the possible remains of a woman who has been missing since September of 2011.

Officers searched in Elgin for any clues in the disappearance of Adriana Laster. Investigators, however, say the search did not turn up any new developments in the case.

The search included the same field where the body of 15-year-old Gabbiee Swainson was found earlier this month.

Cops: Man went to Sunday school after killing baby ( Hamza Ali )

Daily News Staff Writer
A YORK MAN accused of killing a 7-month-old boy in Upper Darby earlier this month hitched a ride with a bus full of churchgoers and then attended Sunday school with them just hours after he allegedly buried the body, according to court documents.

After three weeks of searching unsuccessfully for the body of baby Hamza Ali, authorities yesterday upgraded the charges against Ummad Rushdi, Hamza's mother's boyfriend, from kidnapping to murder.

"This is a barbaric act committed by a barbarian," said Upper Darby Superintendent Michael Chitwood. "I don't believe we ever will find that baby."

Jodi Arias' attorneys ask for change of venue in retrial

Defense attorneys for convicted killer Jodi Arias filed a motion Tuesday asking that her retrial for sentencing be moved to another venue because of the notorious publicity surrounding the case.

Arias’ defense team said research indicates that 70 percent of the media coverage in Arizona of the first trial took place in Maricopa County. Her attorneys also want live TV coverage prohibited for the retrial.

Boy who shot grandmother thought gun was a toy: official

(Reuters) - An 8-year-old Louisiana boy who shot and killed his elderly grandmother after playing a violent video game told authorities "he thought it was a toy gun," East Feliciana Parish District Attorney Samuel D'Aquilla said on Tuesday.

The boy, whose name was not disclosed, is not charged with a crime and has been released to his parents. Louisiana law prevents children under 10 from facing criminal charges, on the assumption that they are not mature enough to have criminal intent, D'Aquilla said.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A man from Springfield entered an Alford plea to a first-degree murder charge on Tuesday morning.

Richard Jones shot and killed his 14-year-old stepson, Trevor Reynolds, at the family’s home on East Livingston Street on July 5, 2012.

An Alford plea means a defendant doesn’t plead guilty but concedes there’s enough evidence to convict him.

The father of a missing Tucson girl claims at least one person knows something about her disappearance more than a year ago.

Tuesday would be Isabel Celis' 8th birthday. Her father, Sergio Celis, said a family member he would not name has refused to talk to the family's private investigator.

"It's frustrating to run against a wall," Sergio Celis said. "This person has an attorney and they're not going to let them speak a word, protecting somebody that we feel has a lot of information to give. And if it has to be anonymous, so be it. We just want her home. We want our baby home. We want this nightmare over."
