Joe Paterno appears to have played a greater role than previously known in Penn State’s handling of a 2001 report that Jerry Sandusky had sexually assaulted a boy in a university shower, according to a person with knowledge of aspects of an independent investigation of the Sandusky scandal.
E-mail correspondence among senior Penn State officials suggests that Paterno influenced the university’s decision not to formally report the accusation against Sandusky to child welfare authorities, the person said. The university’s failure to alert the police or child welfare authorities in 2001 has been an issue at the center of the explosive scandal — having led to criminal charges against two senior administrators and the firing of Paterno last fall.

Algonquin child sex abuse suspect is Gacy’s nephew

WOODSTOCK – A jury will not hear that an Algonquin man accused of sexually assaulting a child is the nephew of serial killer and rapist John Wayne Gacy, a judge ruled Friday.
Raymond M. Kasper, 49, is charged with multiple sex offenses, including predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child.
He is scheduled for trial July 23. His attorney, Michael T. Barrett, filed court documents Tuesday asking that prosecutors be barred from mentioning the relationship to Gacy.
“The defendant is the direct blood nephew of John Wayne Gacy, one of the most notorious serial killers in the history of our nation,” Barrett wrote, arguing that mentioning that fact in court would prejudice a jury.

PHOENIX (AP) — Police have arrested a Phoenix teenager on suspicion of fatally beating and strangling his 15-month-old brother two years ago.
The Arizona Republic reports the 14-year-old boy, whose name is not being released, was taken into custody Wednesday after telling police how he hurt the child.
Police spokesman James Holmes says Jose Valencia Maldonado was pronounced dead at a hospital Dec. 29, 2010. Hospital staff called police when they noticed Jose had bruises, scratches and bite marks.

Police say a missing north Philadelphia boy has been found dead in at the bottom of a pool he had visited earlier in the day with a group of other children.
A police spokeswoman said early Saturday that the body of 7-year-old Isear Jeffcoat was found at the bottom of the pool in the East Oak Lane section of the city. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers earlier sought help from the public in finding the boy, who was with a group of children taken to the pool Friday by day care workers. He was reported missing at about 3 p.m. Friday.

The 17-year-old paid up, then walked out and told his three buddies the robbery plan was a go.
"There's nobody in there but a goofy white guy," Lewis reported back, his trial lawyer recalled this week.
That guy, clerk Michael Heath, ended up dead after 15-year-old Aramis Gonzalez III counted to three, then pulled the trigger.
The four teens — Gonzalez, Lewis, Clarence Laudenberger and Rodney Walton — sprinted off without a dollar.

Neighbors plan vigil for slain Utah girl

WEST JORDAN, Utah (AP) - West Jordan residents plan a vigil remembering a 6-year-old girl who was found dead earlier this week as police continue to search for suspects.
Neighbors of Sierra Newbold say they plan to hold the vigil Friday evening at West Jordan Elementary, where she was to attend school in the fall.
West Jordan police remain tight-lipped as they investigate Newbold's death.

A Delaware man was arrested Thursday after police say a woman came forward claiming he had sexually assaulted her and three others when they were children back in the 1980's.
Police say Richard Bellingham, 57, of Wilmington met the victims through their affiliation with the Church of Our Savior in Concord Township, Delaware County. The church operated from the 1970’s until 2004. Police say Bellingham molested four underage girls between 1981 and 1988.

One day, Sierra Newbold is dancing and dressing up in "fairy costumes" with her kid sister and the next day, she's gone.
"You don't even know hardly how to feel or think — it just upsets your whole world," Sierra's grandmother Frances Newbold said Friday.
"The first day was just so devastating. ... You finally dry up. You run out of tears."

A veteran Miramar Police captain was arrested Friday after he made a teen get naked to prove that she was not having sex in the back seat of a parked car, authorities said.
Capt. Juan de los Rios found a 15-year-old girl talking with a 19-year-old boy in the rear seat of a car in a Miramar industrial park on the afternoon of Jan. 18, according to his arrest affidavit.

HOUSTON – The son of an elderly woman who's been missing for months was arrested and charged after a body was found buried in the backyard of a League City home Thursday.
The body was discovered in the 3100 block of Sand Reef after police performed a welfare check on the 80-year-old woman at the request of Amegy Bank.
The bank employees expressed alarm about the woman’s bank activity. League City police originally went to the home on Wednesday for a welfare check, but a patrol officer felt like they should do a follow-up visit on Thursday.

Weeks before a 4-year-old Mt. Pleasant boy was found dead under a porch, his mother’s boyfriend had been physically abusing him and once left him with a bruised and swollen face, according to an FBI affidavit unsealed today.
The affidavit offered detailed accounts of at least three alleged assaults on the boy by his mom’s boyfriend, Anthony Bennett, who was charged today in federal court with assaulting – but not killing – 4-year-old Carnel Chamberlain.

Steve Powell will be released from prison in May
Steve Powell, the father-in-law of Susan Powell, who last month was sentenced to 30 months in prison for voyeurism, will walk out of prison less than a year from now.
A Washington Department of Corrections spokeswoman on Friday said Powell has a release date of May 23, 2013. The spokeswoman, Selena Davis explained in an email Powell has been given credit for 535 days toward his sentence.

Jury finds Boise day-care provider Katherine Stanfield guilty of first-degree murder
While Katherine Stanfield remained stoic Monday after hearing she was guilty of first-degree murder, her daughter and other family members wept with disbelief.
“This is not right. It can’t be right,” Stacie Duval said as she fought back sobs and squirmed out of the grip of a relative trying to help her from the courtroom.
He said that medical tests found that Wyatt had fresh impact injuries to his forehead, mouth and under the chin, along with evidence of hand marks on his shoulders. There was evidence of older bruising on the boy, consistent with previous abuse, Dinger said.

Mother of Missing Aliayah Lunsford Starts Fraud Sentence
ALDERSON, W.Va. (AP) - The mother of a missing Lewis County 3-year-old has begun serving her eight-month prison sentence for welfare fraud.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons' website shows that 29-year-old Lena Lunsford reported as ordered Thursday and was being held Friday at the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson.

Masked Gunmen Ambush, Kill Teen In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Police say two masked gunmen approached a gas station and ambushed a teenager who was later found shot to death just blocks away.

Family member says man in custody in connection with Carnel Chamberlain disappearance
MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — Police have a man in custody in connection with the discovery of a 4-year-old's body on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe reservation in Isabella County, a family member said today.
Kevin Chamberlain, a spokesman for the family, said the man was in custody as of Thursday night. The man has been a person of interest in the case, police have said.
Kevin Chamberlain is related to 21-year-old Jaimee Chamberlain who reported her son, Carnel, missing a week ago.

Body of missing 4-year-old boy found buried at his Michigan home, family says
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The body of a 4-year-old boy missing for a week was found buried Thursday at his home, a family spokesman said.
Carnel Chamberlain's body was found under a wood porch or deck at the home on the reservation of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, 70 miles north of Lansing, Kevin Chamberlain said.
Chamberlain, the tribe's former chief, said he had no details about what led investigators back to the house after many days of searching woods, ponds and the tribe's wastewater treatment areas.

Optometrist accused of touching genitals to teenage girl’s face to spend 90 days in jail
An optometrist accused of touching his penis to a teenage girl’s face during an exam could have avoided jail but will spend 90 days behind bars and serve five years’ probation.
Danny B. Brikho, 30, was sentenced Thursday after pleading no contest to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct for two separate incidents last summer in which he touched a 16-year-old patient and an 18-year-old female patient with his penis during examinations in his Roseville office. The offense is a two-year misdemeanor.

Death of toddler visiting New Paltz ruled a homicide, no suspects held
The death of a two-year-old girl, Asia Perez-Medina, this past Wednesday afternoon was ruled a homicide by late Thursday morning. The New Paltz Police Department (NPPD) initially responded to a “missing child” call at approximately 4:30 p.m. at 332 Route 32 North in New Paltz. When they arrived, “The aunt was holding the child and the uncle was standing next to her in the front yard,” said NPPD chief Joseph Snyder. According to the chief, the “child was unresponsive when the officers arrived.”

18-27 Year Sentence for Child Killer
CHARLOTTE - A Grand Ledge man is sentenced to 18--27 years in prison for killing a three-month old child last year.
Joshua Piercefield, 23, received his sentence Friday for the death of Olivia Truax.
Truax was the infant child of Piercefield's girlfriend at the time. Prior to a trial, Piercefield pleaded guilty last month to second degree murder.
The child became unresponsive and had to be hospitalized during a family trip to Ohio.

At Kaine Horman's request, a Multnomah County judge this week renewed the restraining order that Kaine Horman obtained against his wife, Terri Lynn Moulton Horman, for another year, lasting through June 24, 2013.

NYC lawyer sought in former Winter Garden resident's murder
A person of interest in a New York City murder may be hiding somewhere in Central Florida.
New York Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. John Grimpel said 33-year-old Jason Bohn is a person of interest in the murder of his girlfriend, 27-year-old Danielle Thomas.
She moved from Metro Orlando to the Queens borough of New York City in April 2012.
Bohn has previous listed addresses in Gainesville, Winter Garden and Miami.

PHOENIX -- A Valley woman and her 14-year-old son were arrested this month following an investigation into the 2010 death of a young child.
Guillermina Maldanado, 32, has been charged with child abuse, while her son has been detained at the Juvenile Court Center for first-degree murder.
On December 29, 2010, 15-month-old Jose Valencia Maldonado was taken to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital by his mother and two other adults because he wasn’t breathing.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges Wednesday against Bob Bashara, and the Local 4 Defenders have sources telling why.

LOGAN, Ohio - A woman pleaded guilty in connection with her daughter-in-law’s slaying on Thursday.
Sandra Inman pleaded guilty to guilty to murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and gross abuse of corpse in connection with Summer Inman’s March 2011 death. Inman’s body was found inside of a septic tank, 10TV News reported.

Bob Bashara was not only charged Wednesday with trying to hire someone to kill Joe Gentz, but Bashara allegedly inquired about having other witnesses killed and tried to intimidate potential witnesses, all related to his wife’s murder case. Those are big reasons why Wayne County prosecutors asked for a $25 million bond and presumably a big part of why Bashara got a $15 million bond, cash or surety, to post to be released from the Wayne County Jail.

West Jordan » Police said Wednesday that the Tuesday death of 6-year-old Sierra Newbold has been ruled a homicide.
Sgt. Drew Sanders also said the autopsy showed evidence that the girl was sexually assaulted.
He said the medical examiner’s office has determined a cause of death for the 6-year-old, but police are withholding that so as not to compromise the investigation.

Police said last week that the effort at the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile was winding down and that they had yet to find 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley's body or anything significant to their case.
The probe may take a new turn Wednesday when police are set to provide an update on their investigation into Jhessye's disappearance. A press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m.

George Zimmerman Bullied Former Colleague, Complaint Says
One of George Zimmerman's former colleagues at CarMax, where he worked in 2008, complained formally about the man who killed Florida teen Trayvon Martin, alleging serial hazing that lasted for months and included pranks and ethnic jokes.

Miami man freed in controversial self-defense ruling killed by stray bullet in Liberty City

Santa Clara County sheriff’s investigators will be “wrapping up” a water search this week for Sierra LaMar or any evidence related to the kidnapping case, using new, high-tech sonar detection equipment that they have had access to in previous weeks.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Jose Cardoza said Monday the county’s dive team was at Chesbro Reservoir in west Morgan Hill, where they used the new sonar equipment starting last week.
The search is not related to a tip or any new evidence, but was ordered by detectives who wanted to see if the more advanced sonar devices would help in completing a more thorough search of the water ways, Cardoza said.

A new batch of documents was released Tuesday in the Case Against Zimmerman as State Attorney Angela Corey’s office continues to build its case.
The move comes in response to an order from Judge Kenneth Lester stating the entirety of the evidence needed to be released within 15 days.

Grosse Pointe Husband Allegedly Caught on Tape Ordering Hit
Investigators say they have video and audio of Bob Bashara attempting a hit on his former handyman, Joe Gentz, who confessed to killing Bashara's wife, Jane.
An informant worked with police in a sting operation and Bashara, 54, allegedly paid $2,000 for the hit, even signing a receipt, sources told ABC News.

New defense attorneys picked in Sherry Arnold case
A new team of defense attorneys has been appointed to represent one of two suspects charged in the murder of a Montana high school teacher.
State District Judge Richard Simonton appointed Alfred Avignone, Lisa Banick and Eric Brewer as the public defenders for 23-year-old Michael Keith Spell of Parachute, Colo.
No explanation was given for the replacement of the two attorneys who previously represented Spell.

Attorney seeks funds for expert to challenge Rasmussen's cause of death
OGDEN — Eric Millerberg’s defense attorney intends to hire an expert to challenge the official cause of death for the teenager Millerberg is accused of killing.
On Tuesday, public defender Randall Marshall told Judge Scott Hadley he would be petitioning the court to appoint an expert to evaluate the state medical examiner’s findings in the Sept. 11 death of 16-year-old Alexis Rasmussen.

Woman indicted 2 months after slaying-baby kidnapping
Verna McClain, 30, is charged with capital murder in the death of Kala Golden Schuchardt, 28, and kidnapping of her infant son, Keegan Schuchardt, from Northwoods Pediatric Center on April 17, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
McClain is being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bail.

Sanford seeks state's help in Zimmerman case

The City of Sanford is asking the Florida state government for help pay for the some of the costs related to the George Zimmerman case, the neighborhood watchman who faces a second-degree murder charge after police said he shot and killed Trayvon Martin.

Grandmother 'cuts off' her eight-month-old baby granddaughter's hands
An eight-month-old baby is recovering in hospital after having both her hands chopped off by her grandmother.
The incident took place when the grandmother was caring for the little girl while her parents were at work in the Shandong Province of China.
The grandmother's motives are not yet known as she remains in a coma since the incident, after she attempted to kill herself.

Carnel Chamberlain disappeared last Thursday while in the care of his mother's boyfriend.
Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe spokesman Frank Cloutier says a search warrant to collect physical evidence was executed Monday. He says the warrant was related to the mother's boyfriend, but did not offer further details.

(CBS/AP) GREAT BEND, Kan. - A Kansas man convicted of capital murder in the killing 14-year-old cheerleader Alicia DeBolt, whose burned remains were found at the asphalt plant where he worked, was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison.
Adam Longoria, 38, was formally sentenced to life imprisonment without the chance of parole for Alicia's murder. Barton County Judge Hannelore Kitts had little leeway in deciding Longoria's punishment because a capital murder conviction in Kansas carries a mandatory sentence of at least life without parole. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.
