Man accused of severely abusing boy, held without bond

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. —

Volusia County deputies have found and arrested the suspect in a child abuse case.
Brian Bouchard, 21, is accused of severely abusing a 14-month-old boy.
Bouchard called 911 early Thursday, two hours after he claims the boy fell while in his care.

Sex offenders live near future home of family park

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

Orange County officials say the location of a future family friendly park will remain unchanged even though WFTV uncovered eight sex offenders live nearby.

The eight sex offenders have all been convicted of crimes involving children, and some live within a one-mile radius of the future location of the 27 Acre Park on Young Pine Drive near Curry Ford Road.

NAACP leaders hold march and rally for Trayvon Martin in Sanford

SANFORD, Fla. —

National NAACP leaders and activists from around the country will hold a march and rally Saturday in Sanford demanding justice for Trayvon Martin.
NAACP officials say the purpose of the march and rally is to 'move the national conversation on race from anger to answers'. The march begins at 11:00 a.m. at Crooms Academy on West 13th Street and ends at the Sanford Police Department.

A 17-year-old convicted rapist accused of attacking a woman while out on bond appeared before an Orange County judge on Friday.
The judge revoked Isaiah Cain's bond.
Cain told a judge that he did not need a public defender, but now court records show he has one.

Civil rights leaders condemn Sharpton's call for escalated civil disobedience

The Rev. Al Sharpton said Friday his National Action Network will "move to the next level" if George Zimmerman is not arrested in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Sharpton called for an escalation in peaceful civil disobedience and economic sanctions, although he did not say what those sanctions might be.

Jada Justice’s killer still not sentenced

Nearly three years ago, Timothy Tkachik agreed to testify against his co-defendant in the murder of 2-year-old Jada Justice.

Tkachik testified in the 2010 jury trial of Engelica Castillo, who is serving a life sentence in the 2009 beating death of Jada.

SIDNEY -- At 1:50 p.m. the Sidney High gymnasium fell silent and 10 minutes later the funeral service for Sherry Arnold began.

Adam Longoria murder trial opens: Texts, DNA at issue

GREAT BEND Prosecutor Andrew Bauch wants jurors to believe that the man who killed Alicia DeBolt and burned her body is none other than Adam Longoria. That he was the person who tried to lure the 14-year-old through a long series of text messages that began “Good morning, beautiful” and “Wake up, sleeping beauty.”
Besides the text messages, jurors will hear evidence that Longoria, 36, drove a black SUV similar to the one witnesses saw Alicia get into the night she disappeared, that Longoria later bought $1.32 worth of gas, that his shoes showed traces of gasoline, that a mixture of his DNA and her DNA was found in a semen stain on the floorboard of his girlfriend’s black SUV.

No initial evidence of juror misconduct in Young trial

Young, 37, was convicted and sent to prison for life in the 2006 beating death of his wife Michelle earlier this month.

Teen rapist accused of attacking woman with hammer to face judge

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

A convicted rapist will appear before a judge on Friday after investigators said he was arrested for assaulting another girl.
Investigators said 17-year-old Isaiah Cain cut off his GPS bracelet, attacked a woman with a hammer and then ran away on Wednesday. Officials said they caught Cain Thursday morning.

New Trayvon Martin Witness Speaks To Anderson Cooper About Night Of Shooting

On his show Thursday night, Anderson Cooper spoke to a new witness in the Trayvon Martin case. The witness, whose identity remains anonymous, described seeing “scuffling” and heard a “painful” scream. Trayvon Martin: City of Sanford says reporters won't be arrested for asking about Trayvon Martin case

The city of Sanford tonight decided that reporters won't be arrested for pursuing the Trayvon Martin story after normal business hours.
A news release sent Wednesday warned that police would arrest reporters on stalking charges if they contacted city employees when they were off the job. The threat barred reporters from sending emails, calling or approaching workers.

George Zimmerman's brother talks about shooting

George Zimmerman's brother insists the neighborhood watch captain did not follow Trayvon Martin before shooting and killing the unarmed teen.

1-year-old badly beaten, mom's boyfriend arrested

 

DELAND -- 
Deputies have caught a man they say beat a 1-year-old boy so badly that the child is now in the hospital on life support.
Officials said Brian Bouchard, 21, was caring for the Isaiah Mitchell at the time of his injury last Saturday. Bouchard was living with the child's mother. Deputies were told he had fallen, but the boy had severe head trauma, and his face was swollen and bruised.

Sanford retracts threat to arrest reporters for contacting workers

SANFORD, Fla. -
The city of Sanford retracted its threat to arrest reporters who ask city employees questions about the Trayvon Martin case after hours.
The threat came in a press release a public relations firm hired by the city sent Wednesday, stating workers had been followed and approached at their homes by reporters working on the Martin story.
The press release said police won't hesitate to arrest members of the news media. The threat drew national attention Thursday, and by the end of the day the city retracted it.

Texas boy missing 8 years to remain in foster care

HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston boy who disappeared as an infant eight years ago and who was recently found will remain in foster care while therapists determine when he can be reunited with his parents, a judge ruled on Wednesday.

State District Judge Mike Schneider agreed with a Child Protective Services recommendation that 8-year-old Miguel Morin should remain in the state's care at least until a May 16 hearing. The judge also signed off on a child services recommendation that Miguel and his parents, Auboni Champion-Morin and Fernando Morin, undergo therapy separately to see when the boy might be ready for a reunion.

Jerry Sandusky trial rescheduled for early June

Scheduling issues have pushed the child-sex-abuse trial of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky from mid-May until early June, the Harrisburg Patriot-News is reporting.

Glendale police say landfill search for missing girl is nearing the halfway point

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Police say the landfill search south of Phoenix for a missing Glendale child is nearing the halfway point. Glendale police spokesman Sgt. Brent Coombs says that so far, searchers have combed through over 2,500 tons of trash searching for the body of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley. Woman Sentenced To Six Years In Jail For Son's Death

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A woman accused of criminally negligent homicide and child neglect has been sentenced to six years in prison.
Arnes'a Hart, 24, pleaded guilty earlier this year.
She was working as a desk clerk at the Comfort Inn on Music Valley Drive in Donelson in February 2011 when she allegedly left her three-year-old and four-month-old sons in a vacant room, without any supervision.

Autistic boy's drowning another tragedy for family

The Quincy Herald-Whig (http://bit.ly/Hl3dCz ) reports that Christian Riley Baucom of Colony was reported missing Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, Missouri State Highway Patrol divers found his body after a small pond was drained.Christian’s brother drowned in a different pond in August. The two boys were living with a Mennonite family because their mother is in prison. Christian did not live in the home by the pond where his body was found, but was cared for by several different sisters of a Mennonite family.

Severed leg that washed up on Florida beach belongs to missing woman, police say

A severed leg that washed ashore three months ago has been identified as that belonging to a missing 38-year-old woman, whose girlfriend also disappeared.

Belgrade children reunited with mother after 7 months

New information has been released about three missing Belgrade children who were found safe in Florida.
The kids were reunited with their mother on Wednesday evening in an undisclosed location in Florida; it is not yet known when they will return to Montana.
Belgrade police tell us they were able to track computer IP addresses to determine that the father, James Ray Bryant, was residing in the Bahamas for seven months with his current wife Angela and the three children - the children he failed to return to their mother in August.

DNA confirms remains are that of missing Colo. mom

GRAND JUNCTION (AP) - DNA test results have confirmed that skeletal remains found in western Colorado are that of Grand Junction resident Paige Birgfeld, who disappeared in 2007.
Hikers found the remains earlier this month in Delta County. Dental records had allowed investigators to tentatively identify the remains as those of Birgfeld.

Police video of Trayvon Martin's killer the 'smoking gun,' lawyer says

SANFORD, Fla. –  A lawyer for Trayvon Martin's parents said Wednesday new video showing the teen's killer George Zimmerman after their deadly clash, but without the head injuries he claims were inflicted upon him in the scuffle, was "the smoking gun" for those seeking to have him arrested.

The CCTV footage, released Wednesday, shows Zimmerman climbing handcuffed out of a police car and engaging with officers after he killed Martin, 17, on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla.

A police detective told the father of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin that his son initiated two confrontations with the neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot him.
Tracy Martin, describing the police version of events in a meeting Wednesday with Washington Post reporters and editors, said he did not believe the official account, which was conveyed to him two days after his 17-year-old son was killed Feb. 26. The detective’s explanation, as relayed by Martin, largely coincides with recent news reports that George Zimmerman told investigators that he shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense.
