Nearly two years after the murder of a Hermleigh baby, no one has been arrested or charged in connection with the death, and officials have no timeline for moving the case forward.

"The murder investigation of Makynli Hopkins is still active and will remain so indefinitely, since there is not a statute of limitation for murder," Scurry County Sheriff Darren Jackson said.

On March 4, 2010, her parents, Zach Hopkins and Cassie Harbin, called 911 and brought the 14-week-old baby to Snyder from the family home in Hermleigh, and met Scurry County EMS at a local motel.

Georgia To Execute Man for Slayings of Mother, Infant

By: Associated Press | WSAV-TV
Published: January 31, 2012

A Georgia prison inmate who has refused to challenge his death sentence was set to be executed Tuesday for leading a violent robbery that left a woman and her 3-year-old daughter slain at their Paulding County home.

Nicholas Cody Tate was scheduled to be put to death by injection at 7 p.m. in the state prison in Jackson for the murders of Chrissie Williams and her daughter Katelyn.

His case presents a host of challenges to Georgia's legal system because it has moved rapidly through the death penalty process. That's because Tate has refused to challenge his conviction and death sentence through habeas corpus appeals, a process that could have postponed his execution for years.

Zahra Baker's birth mother clueless about daughter's ashes

Posted on January 31, 2012 at 7:49 AM
Updated today at 8:05 AM

SYDNEY -- The Australian mother of 10-year-old Zahra Baker who was murdered by her stepmother in North Carolina said Tuesday she has no idea what became of her daughter's ashes since the child's father brought them to Australia.

Attorney Shell Pearce said Monday that his client, Adam Baker, left the United States roughly two weeks ago at the behest of U.S. federal immigration officials, bringing the remains of his daughter, Zahra, with him for burial in Australia.

However, Vincent Picard, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in an email Monday that Baker had "voluntarily departed" the U.S., which Pearce disputed.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement Tuesday that "Mr. Baker was deported from the United States to Australia in January." The department provided no other details.

Zahra's biological mother Emily Dietrich said her daughter's remains might have been buried in Australia without her knowledge.

MUNCIE -- A Muncie mother and daughter had a reunion of sorts on Monday, but it was under the worst of circumstances.

Angela Louise Rice Lee, 45, and her daughter, Samra Nicole Lee, 21, were arrested last week on charges stemming from the March 2010 death of Lauren McConniel.

Authorities say the 5-year-old Muncie girl became dangerously emaciated and was physically abused during the final seven months of her life, while living in a South Ebright Street house with her father, stepmother and the Lees -- Angela and her husband, Robert, and their daughter, Samra.

Lauren's stepmother, Brittany McConniel -- Angela Lee's daughter from an earlier relationship -- was sentenced to 50 years in prison last summer after being convicted of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Blood found at missing toddler's home is Ayla Reynolds'

WATERVILLE — Blood found by police at Ayla Reynolds' home belongs to the missing toddler.

Police confirmed the information Sunday night. It was first posted earlier Sunday on aylareynolds.com, a website maintained by Ayla's maternal family in Portland.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said Sunday night said that testing has revealed that at least some of the blood samples that were found in the home during a December search belong to Ayla.

Blood found, suspicion cast in missing Maine toddler case

Susan Candiotti CNN
Published On: Jan 28 2012 01:42:08 PM EST Updated On: Jan 28 2012 08:01:40 PM EST

(CNN) -
Maine police revealed Saturday that blood was found in missing toddler Ayla Reynolds' basement and, for the first time, cast doubt on the accounts of adults who were in the home when she was last seen -- saying they don't "pass the 'straight-face' test in Maine."

"We feel they know more than they're telling us," said Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Investigators found the blood during their initial search of the Waterville, Maine, house, though they did not specify how much blood there was and where exactly in the basement it was located. Determining whose blood it is is "a top priority of the crime lab," McCausland said.

At 3:36 p.m., the sheriff’s office received an emergency call about the home off Mechanicsville Turnpike near Lee-Davis High School. When officers arrived, they found the man and the girls dead, said Sgt. Chris Whitley, a spokesman for the department.

Whitley did not reveal the cause of death and did not immediately release the names of the victims. He said the county medical examiner was investigating and that the names were being withheld pending notification of family.

Trista Reynolds, who rocked back and forth on the City Hall steps as she talked to DiPietro, earlier had addressed the news that police have been analyzing blood found in the basement of the Waterville home where 20-month-old Ayla was last seen.

“I don’t have the answers you guys are looking for,” she told media gathered at the vigil. “I want to know where she is and who took her.”

Cory Byrd found guilty of murdering 4-year-old Marc Bookal

By Heather Yakin

Published: 2:00 AM - 01/27/12

GOSHEN — It took a jury of 10 men and two women just 4½ hours of deliberations to find Cory Byrd guilty of murdering of 4-year-old Marc Bookal.

Marc's mother, Christina Bookal, watched from the back row on one side of the courtroom gallery; Marc's father, Yul Bookal, watched from the other side. Jurors sent the judge a note at 12:10 p.m. Thursday saying they had reached a verdict.

As the jury voted "not guilty" on the intentional murder charge, a small gasp escaped from one of the friends who came to support Christina Bookal.

Byrd, 32, was stoic as the jury foreman pronounced him guilty on the second murder count — guilty of killing Marc with utter, depraved indifference to the consequences of his actions. The jury also convicted him on two felony evidence-tampering charges.
