‘Fatal Vision’ author, killer meet again after 35 years

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Joe McGinniss could not believe his eyes. The man he saw in a North Carolina courtroom last week was stooped and shackled, hardly the same smooth and swaggering Jeffrey MacDonald who had told his story so many years ago.

To say the author and the convicted killer have a history would be an understatement. If anything, their first face-to-face meeting in 35 years was anticlimactic.

Discovery evidence rings familiar in Andrea Sneiderman case

Posted: 5:08 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012
By Christian Boone
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Discovery evidence filed this week by prosecutors charging Andrea Sneiderman in the killing of her husband indicates a case similar to the one brought against the Dunwoody widow’s former boss, Hemy Neuman.

Neuman was sentenced to life in prison in March for fatally shooting Rusty Sneiderman outside his son’s daycare facility. The Cobb County engineer’s relationship with Andrea Sneiderman figured prominently in that case and will again in the second trial, as prosecutors are alleging the former co-workers conspired to kill the Dunwoody entrepreneur.

More than 9,000 pages of evidence, along with 91 discs containing interviews, audio and video records, were shared by the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office with the defense team on Tuesday.

PHOENIX - The trial of Elizabeth Johnson could end weeks earlier than expected.
On Wednesday, attorneys predicted closing arguments could begin as early as next week.

The trial had been expected to last until early November because the jury had two weeks off in August due to scheduling conflicts.

However, the trial is moving along faster than anticipated partly because Johnson’s attorney, Marc Victor, is doing very little, if any, cross examining of the prosecution’s witnesses.

Saying that Mollie Shouse showed remorse only for herself in the death of her two-year-old son, who was left to die in a sweltering car, a judge on Wednesday denied the pleas from her attorney and family for a more lenient sentence and ordered Shouse to spend 35 years in prison.

“You have to take responsibility for this,” Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Olu Stevens told Shouse, noting that she had lied repeatedly to police about what happened to Kenton Brown on May 21, 2011 and refused to take responsibility. “You are responsible for this life that is no more. I didn’t see anywhere ... where you showed remorse for what your child went through, what he suffered at your hands.”

Doctor Who Ruled Savio’s Death A Homicide Speaks Out About Peterson Trial

September 25, 2012 5:55 PM
CHICAGO (CBS) – The pathologist who ruled Kathleen Savio was the victim of a homicide after authorities reopened their investigation into her death said being skeptical was the key to determining it was no simple accident.

CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli reports Dr. Larry Blum’s testimony at Drew Peterson’s murder trial this summer was a key factor in the jury’s decision to convict Peterson of killing his third wife.

Blum performed the second autopsy on Savio’s body, three and a half years after a coroner’s jury determined her 2004 death to be an accident.

Chatham County District Attorney: No deliberate delays in Buckner murder trial (Asleigh Moore)

By Jan Skutch
Prosecutors have told the Georgia Supreme Court they did not deliberately delay the trial of accused murderer Bobby Lavon Buckner and cannot be faulted for lost evidence they blame on other law enforcement agencies.

The legal brief and arguments were filed in the state’s attempt to reverse Chatham County Superior Court Judge Penny Haas Freesemann’s May 30 dismissal of murder and kidnapping charges in the 2003 abduction and slaying of 12-year-old Ashleigh Moore because prosecutors violated the defendant’s right to a speedy trial.

After hearing, Jeffrey MacDonald awaits judge's ruling

By Jonathan SerriePublished
September 25, 2012
Both sides have wrapped up closing arguments in a hearing revisiting Jeffrey MacDonald's 1979 murder conviction. But a federal judge's decision on whether to vacate or uphold the original conviction or order a new trial could still be weeks away.

This morning, the former Army doctor's lawyers argued for a motion to vacate the 33-year-old conviction, based largely on statements from witnesses who said they heard Helena Stoeckley, a now-deceased drug user, claim that she was at the scene of the 1970 murders and that three of her friends attacked MacDonald, his pregnant wife and two daughters.

Peterson lawyer asks judge to delay sentencing, cites attorney infighting

By Stacy St. Clair, Chicago Tribune reporter
September 26, 2012
A bitter feud between Drew Peterson's lawyers has prevented the defense team from working on a critical post-trial motion, lead attorney Joel Brodsky told a judge Tuesday.

The admission came the day after one attorney formally quit the case and another sent Brodsky a letter accusing him of being a "bully." With a nod to the highly publicized infighting, Brodsky asked the judge to postpone the Bolingbrook police sergeant's November sentencing.

A Sanford judge has set an Oct. 19 hearing so that George Zimmerman's lawyer and prosecutors can argue over what to do about Trayvon Martin's school records.

Trayvon is the unarmed black 17-year-old whom Zimmerman fatally shot Feb. 26 in Sanford.

Earlier this month defense attorney Mark O'Mara issued subpoenas for the school records, making clear that he wants to look at Trayvon's disciplinary records, attendance, test scores and other information.

Trial of chef who said he cooked wife’s body goes to jury

September 25, 2012 | 1:26 pm

Jurors are expected to begin deliberations Tuesday afternoon in the murder trial of David Viens, the chef who told authorities he cooked his wife's dead body to dispose of it.

Dawn Viens was 39 when she disappeared in October 2009. Her body has never been found, but in an interview last year with sheriff's investigators, her husband gave a grisly explanation as to why.

David Viens said he packed her body into a large drum and boiled it in water over four days, according to the interview played for jurors. He poured much of what remained into the grease trap of his Lomita restaurant and threw other remains in the trash, he said. In the weeks that followed, Viens tried to cover his tracks with a string of lies and fake text messages.
