SAN DIEGO --
- A man remained jailed Saturday, arrested for the second time for allegedly beating and stabbing a 14-year-old girl whose body was found in an abandoned house on Golden Hill on New Year's Eve 2007.Antero Salmeron Cruz, 23, was arrested about 9 p.m. Thursday in the 2800 block of Clay Avenue for the Dec. 31, 2007 death of Ahlyja Pinson, according to San Diego police homicide Lt. Ernie Herbert. The arrest comes more than a year after prosecutors dropped charges against Cruz, citing insufficient evidence to win a conviction. But SDPD homicide detectives reviewed their case and said additional evidence justified police to arrest Cruz again in the slaying, Herbert said.
But he would not say what that evidence is.In 2007, a homeless man found Pinson's body in an abandoned house at 29th and E streets, about five hours after she left a relative's home to meet up with a cousin to go to Seaport Village. The house was frequented by squatters and drug users.Cruz was an acquaintance of Ahlyja's and was first arrested in the case on Jan. 10, 2008 because witness statements and physical evidence in the abandoned house tied him to the death, according to police. But prosecutors decided against charging him four days after his arrest.Cruz was booked into jail Thursday on a suspicion of murder warrant. He is being held on $1 million bail.Read more at www.10news.com
