PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A California judge says the couple charged with kidnapping Jaycee Dugard will be allowed to speak with each other while in jail.
The decision by El Dorado Superior Court Judge Douglas C. Phimister came Friday in response to a defense request that the two suspects be allowed jailhouse visits.
Defense attorneys had argued that Phillip and Nancy Garrido had the constitutional right to visit each other to discuss family issues. Prosecutors opposed the idea.
Phimister said Friday Nancy Garrido would be allowed to place two five minute phone calls to her husband until the next court hearing on April 15, when the matter will be addressed further.
The judge also appointed two lawyers to represent Dugard's two daughters, who were fathered by Garrido.
